A Back in the Swing of it 4th of July
Ok, Good morning … this is us and it is almost 8 am. We’re all here going through a thing, because somebody accidently locked her kitties in the back bedroom overnight. We didn’t know … we should have known … I remember lying down in the bedtime chair thinking it was unusual they didn’t come out, but then we thought they must be tired or crabby. Then lover bunny woke us up on the phone and after we got done with that we looked around and there were no kitties to join us in the bathroom … then we got a little panicky … we came around back to the kitchen and looked immediately toward the back door, but thank goodness it was still shut, but then we knew immediately by looking right that we’d shut the door and not opened it – the one to the bedroom. Usually, we don’t shut that door, but I was looking at the mirror on the back side of it, which means it got shut. I hadn’t seen any kitties when I had done that so I didn’t think twice. BUT, sure enough they were both in there.
Man do I feel something … insert negative word here … I would never do that intentionally, but I had a hard time convincing them of that … first thought was that they were very hungry, and they had to use the washroom, and then they wanted fresh air and birds so we cut off the air. Chief tried getting pet for a moment, but they are too jumpy for that … they are going to need relaxing and trying to trust me again. They are a little unsure of whether they want to do that. I think Missy is hiding behind the couch. Chief would normally go back to sleep on that bed, but I’m not sure he wants to be on that side of the door. I feel pretty bad about it. I hope they forgive me pretty soon. Nothing like a kitty with ruffled feathers!
I’m wondering if I should get in the shower before I settle down … ok … good thinking … brb
Ahh … that’s better … Missy says so too … she says we were smelling phoofy. Eh, you know cats … they are so particular. Missy came up for just a moment, but then cuz she was meowing that she’d gotten up then Chief came by to shoo her away. He didn’t want to come up, but I guess he’s guardian of the rights committee and I’m still in the Dog house. Man it’s going to be a tough day with them … I don’t know what I’ll have to do to make things good with them again. I think the door to the balcony helps … they are both sitting in front of it now. Nice breeze today.
*Sigh*
Ok, lets get on to the good part … did you hear … somebuddies best buddy called! I think it was right before 7 am. He might have thought he was catching me for work, not remembering it is fourth of July off. I’m pretty sure that’s why we’re feeling better. He said he wanted to check in to see how we were doing … we felt really good about that, especially because he had said before he wasn’t calling until tonight. That will help our day along too. He said that they were coming in for breakfast soon. We asked him about the fishing, but he seemed kind of huffy there … I don’t think the fishing is going well for him. He did say something this time about a real fishy that he’d caught, but it got a way. He said it was a fishy of a life time. I think he’s got 2 ½ days to try that again. I sure hope he catches big fishys before he comes home, cuz I’d hate to see him grumpy for a whole nother year. I didn’t get out of him how the others were doing.
I asked him about the good food and he said, “What good food?!” Oh oh … strike 2.
That conversation wasn’t going to happen very far either. He did for the record sound more relaxed on this call, but then I had to ask the next obvious question. “How are you getting along with your partner?” “Mr. Zill?!!” I thought oh oh … that doesn’t sound good either. Then he mumbled something about 3-5 days being plenty long. So we counted. Friday, Saturday, Sunday … that’s three Monday, Tuesday … that’s five. SO, we’re thinking this is the day he has to turn the corner or be miserable the rest of the vacation. I’ve heard him do this kind of thing before. There’s the part he can’t wait to get out, and then there’s the part where he can’t wait to get back. He was saying something about back rubs. I said something about how his sex drive was … “Are you ready for sex yet?” He said it’s on his priority list … so we asked him is it on the top yet? He says its getting there Hehehe … he’ll be like that, but we’re pretty sure that’s what he is going to be thinking of that last couple of hours before getting in. Hehehe. Good Rich. Oh and we asked him how were the pretty women … and he said … “What women?” LOL yah yah … that’s the way those burly camps go … the only women are the owner’s wife, mother-in-law and daughter, so we figure the female deer are looking good. ROFL See that’s one thing a girl has for herself … Sexuality is a good thing - specially for taking the grizzly out of one’s hunny bear.
*Sigh* then he went back to saying he just wanted to check up on us … we gave him a good report this morning. He said he’d remembered we are better in the morning than later as far as that goes. I told him we’d talked to Dr. Marvin last night. But, then that is for another time. We didn’t tell him about anything … had nothing to say … cuz mostly we’re just missing him. He had said at the other phone call that I shouldn’t call him again. *Giggle* He said that it had turned out ok, because he was the first guy in that morning, but he said that he was pretty sure that he was the only one that got a call at fishy camp from his girlfriend. *Giggle* It took me a min to think that through, but I guess most of the guys have wives. Maybe the girl who answered the phone realized someone back here wasn’t getting sexed?! Nah … that wasn’t it … we did tell him he’d called us just 10 minutes before, but by then had left the main house before we could figure out how to use the phone for Canada.
Silly us. Hmm, he should later on during the hot day or rainy one appreciate the thought that his girl friend misses him, hmm?
Good fishyman.
So, after that … there’s not much to write about. We did talk to Dr. Marvin about getting some work done. He had to chase us up 4-5 parts before he could get one who was taking more responsibility. The first part was just small and whiney, and it progressed though the last part out was kind of shy … I don’t think we were getting it, but we were walking through some kind of pace. We’ll try to get back there by 10 am. It’s about 8:45 am now. I really don’t think there is anything else to talk about. Maybe that will change after we get ourselves another cup of coffee? Let’s try that out.
We’re already hungry and there’s not much out there … so we are mixing us some frozen vegetables. We figure we’ll have some with some salsa. We tried a pickle too, but we’re not liking them much anymore. Maybe we have some of that other stuff where you have to boil something … that’s pretty much the edge of our abilities.
Let me see. Woo Hoo … we can make frozen vegetables. We put the other stuff in too … it’s supposed to be some kind of creamy noodles. They are going to take 10 minutes though … that will be cool if it turns out. We’re going to make it! These vegetables are hot and hot. Ahh that hit the spot … if I can make ourselves do that again there are plenty of vegetables in there – sky high! Well, ok, well you know what I mean.
Umm thoughts? No we’re not having any yet … we’ll get back to you there.
Hmm, did I tell you we were reading the sex coaching things yesterday on line from AOL? It seemed there was more on being nice to your partner than that … but we did learn a little trick about playing out the plateau. Hehehe … Shhh let’s not go there girls, hmm?
Must be feeling some sexual tension here, hmm? We’re up to that time its feeling like its been forever. Need to wait the better part of 4 more days … hmm. That’s going to be tough … well if you hear later we’re climbing the walls that will be about it, k?
Ahh noodles. This is what food is for … to take pressure off of other stuff.
Could this explain a wait of over 300? Well, there were quite a few years bunny wasn’t living here … Do we want to blame our lack of control on our best friend?
Naw … lets not do this … it was just poor self-management, hmm?
Yeah let’s not talk about that until after the noodles are gone. Pshwoo … that’s all got us kinda hot. We’re talking warm not sex though, k? Get that off your mind please?
So … about 9:30 am. Should be doing something … hmm, what happened if we took something outside and sat in the breeze? That’s not a bad idea. Could we think through what we could take out? I know you want to bring the book, but lets think towards work. Maybe we could work on short article outlines? Hmm, no we need the computer for that. Remember next time up to get the thumb drive from the kitchen k? That will have our reports we want to take things from.
Dr. Marvin said we should concentrate on the audience. The idea is to make a report that kind of show cases some of the things going on at the center. We want to get into some of the heavy things like policies and other heavy minded things, but we don’t want to loose the lesser thinking audience. We don’t want to dumb it down either. We need some kind of a central thought that is going to tie everything together. We had first thought of the business-side, but we haven’t gone over that in a while. Why don’t we take what we have outside and see how it comes up so far, k? Go ahead, we’ll be right here when you get back. Go ahead, you can do it!
Ok, that was a bit of a pep talk … we brought out our coffee, outline and paper and pen and wrote down a few ideas trying to hold, but limit the scope of things. This is about where we are.
Find a common theme, but keep it subtle. Excite the audience. Think how do we introduce what we are as a center – invite them to think through – while catching the DSPs attention too. What would it take to interest them? You can do this – lets pull it together so that we are interested too. Think over and over to invite them. What is their purpose in reading the report. Dr. M. says, he wants to get a general picture of what is happening with the organization. We want to cover depth without bogging people down. Think why are these areas important? We want them to hold together what it is that we’re all about without overwhelming them in detail.
Ok, now we need to think. Lets go over and find the 3-5 key attributes in each area and make an outline so we can tie it together. Lets not worry about perfection – lets just do the best we can. Remember you are a writer, so you are just performing what you know how to do. Take it lite!
Well … you want to know something … we made it straight through the day for about 8 hours work – but there was eating in between. We are still hesitating about going out for laundry and fruit, BUT the annual report is done with the exception of some demographic stuff – charts. That’s like the baby easy kind of stuff you save for the last. Mostly though because we forgot the information we want to write about at work. SHHHEEESH! I think we’re going to handle it though. Sister will be soooo happy when the report gets done, she is each year at this time. It used to take me a month to write an annual report and now it takes me 8 hours. Man that just has to be the right system. I will include it at the bottom of this document. WOOHOOO!
Almost DONE!!!
So, that’s about all I want to say about that. In the meantime we wrote Dr. Marvin a short note saying …
Dear Dr. Marvin,
What do you think? I couldn't have finished this project without your help. We started about 10 am and worked through the day ... we still spend a lot of time in rereading, but we had a few extra hours to spend today. Rosa has been working on the cover designs and picture layouts and is just waiting for the text. I'll make sure you get a copy when its done. I sure hope Sr. approves. We emailed her a copy a short while ago.
We're feeling better in general today, and much more like the us we would like to be. But, we're still having troubles going out to pick up the laundry or get our needed fruit. We got one of our new outfits yesterday - Rich gave money toward getting new clothes and we matched it with sister's refund check for overbilling our dental insurance. We figure we'll wear that tomorrow and try to pick up laundry after we meet with you. They are open 7 to 11.
In other good news, fishyman called this morning and seems to be more relaxed. He is though thinking 3-5 days is long enough to be with Bob, complained that the food was nothing special, noted there are no women around, didn't catch his big fishy, and is pretty darn sure he can be ready for backrubs and sex. WOOHOOO! They love to go, but sure like to get back. This is my freedom observation and initiative for the day.
Hope you had a wonderful 4th and didn't get lost in crowds downtown.
We love the pieces out of you.
Ann
Good Ann … hmm, did I mention we had a couple Margaritas during the last 2-3 hours of writing? It sure made things go smoother. This is done, ok … next?! Hehehe
Now we’re thinking we are in the mood for a couple of more Margaritas. We did finish THE Annual Report for the year. WOOHOOO. Ohh we said that. Well, how about it being a WOOOHOOOO for being the fourth of July … something that we have not celebrated in the least. I think a little private party is in order! Umm we’ll
take our medicine too BRB.
Go on … now shoo!
Aha! We did right by that … we didn’t want to run fishyman out of his Margarita, so we just did a 1/3 Margarita and we did the rest lemonade. We don’t need to be real whooshed over to take joy in watching fireworks off the balcony. It’s about 8 pm now … better check when they are supposed to start. When does it get dark anyway?
Hmm?
Well ok, you knew we were going to have to do something like that, right? Ahh come’on its time to put away work and do holiday thinking! We have to forgive Rich the part that we had no barbeque. Nothing an extra drink won’t cure.
If I were really on top of my game I would use this excellent time to be reading.
We still got about 80 pages left to go on our binge book, and I would like to finish it before Rich gets back. I think the information would be very useful to him for many reasons. Hmm, I wonder … no lemonade at least is only 15 calories … and what is ice? Shheesh Everyone’s a critic tonight.
Chances are that we aren’t going to stay up too late watching fireworks, because we are planning on getting sleepy. Hmm? That be a good girl? Oh that’s right we need to look at a schedule. Ok, we’re good to go …
Ahh Chicago fireworks are on right now … at least the concert that’s going on … and then at 9

Annual Report
June 30, 2007
Rosa’s Front Cover
Sr. Theresa - I just have the completion of the demographics to do (1-2 hours). I forgot the notes at work.
You and Rosa can move around the columns as you wish, but I’d prefer the double columns.
Please remind Rosa that the type should all match and be 11 pitch. So far, we’ve just used Times New Roman – this can be easily changed, but the type should be easily readable.
I hope that you liked the way it turned out. I like it a lot. It feels like the most professional I’ve done without being overly complex. Please let me know if you approve or will need to make changes.
The project will be easiest if you use the email I sent this document in and just forward to Rosa’s email address. Then she can adapt it to her needs without typing over.
It is always a pleasure … thanks for the opportunity to do this report. ann

Our Leadership
St. Rose Center is committed to providing effective leadership through the Governance Board of Directors, Administrative team, staff and other important committees to assure the stability of the organization and foster the realization of its mission and goals. Our mission states that:
Each individual served will become independent and involved in the community by encouraging him or her to strive for their highest potential, make informed choices, develop and exercise competencies, and strive for self-sufficiency and personal security.
St. Rose Center annually reviews the mission statement and checks its goals against the applicable laws and regulations of the Illinois Department of Human Service (IDHS). It applies an important code of ethics relating to its responsibilities, resources, practices, delivery, and activities.
The leadership also completes tasks such as approving budgets, conducting strategic planning, reviewing reports including risk and performance analysis; it safely ensures coverage of the program and it assesses the use of technology for both business and programming needs and opportunities.
Our Code of Ethics
The governance board follows the Ethical Standards set by the Archdiocese of Chicago, the State of Illinois, and the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence – the community who owns and operates St. Rose Center.
Each staff member adheres to the ethical practices and promises a commitment to formal job agreements. In addition, annual reviews are made by the independent accounting firm of Geissler and Associates who document our business and financial practices.
Leadership and staff commit to not having any interest, financial or otherwise, direct or indirect, or engage in any business, employment, transaction or professional activity, or incur any obligation of any nature, which is in substantial conflict with the proper discharge of his or her duties or employment of her responsibilities as prescribed in the financial management of St. Rose Center and in accordance with the laws of this state.
The policy of St. Rose Center is to educate personnel and other stakeholders on ethical codes of conduct. St. Rose Center will serve the advocacy efforts for the persons served, maintain policies on contractual relationships, and demonstrate corporate citizenship. The Code of Ethics reflects and includes the best practices, policies, and procedures created by St. Rose Center.

Our Corporate Compliance
Sister Theresa Tamburo is the Corporate Compliance Officer chairing our compliance team and acting as primary point of contact for all compliance issues including making recommendations to the Governance Board.
The team develops, implements, and monitors – on a regular and consistent basis – the corporate compliance plan including all internal and external monitoring, auditing, investigative and reporting processes, procedures, and systems.
Persons served are welcomed at any meetings concerning St. Rose Center and they are members of the Human Rights Committee and Governance Board of Directors as well as other groups.
St. Rose Center answers any specific questions about the performance of its accredited and licensed programs and services. The CARF accreditation performance reports are available for reading as well as surveys by the Illinois Department of Human Services. St. Rose Center makes the public aware of its policies and procedures through requests and through its annual report, brochures, newsletter, and web site.
St. Rose Center ensures that it stays informed of changes and remains current by membership in various organizations, literature, and through networking with various agencies. St. Rose Center encourages recommendations made to improve response and prevention initiatives.
Our Assessments
St. Rose Center annually reports and reviews plans that are made to reduce risk in each of the performance improvement activities including financial, accessibility, resource allocation, surveys, Governance, human resource, technology, environmental health and safety, field trends, and our service delivery system.
This year’s assessments included discussion on how to cover or reduce costs of service that isn’t covered by funds received by IDHS, donations, grants, and fundraisers. It addressed accessibility barriers preventing individuals’ access to day programming and the center’s present outreach effort.
The Administration team considers foremost the center’s self-improvement in its discussions of business and programming. The team is responsible for agenda items such as transportation, financial, case reviews, intake programmatic, community, safety, IDHS, CARF, building and grounds, policies and procedures, consumers, personnel, and surveys. The emphasis is on solving problems in a cost preventative and timely manner.
One of the outcomes of the current assessments is to obtain resources so that more individuals can have access to being active community members. Many of the individuals would like to work in the community.

Our Accessibility
St. Rose Center completes annually an accessibility plan. This plan considers barriers to programming needs such as architectural, environmental, attitude, financial, employment, communication, and transportation.
Architectural barriers addressed were items such as providing air conditioning, updating electrical lights, changing to environmentally-friendly windows and doors, and building a new storage facility. Architectural barriers take into consideration the individuals’ comfort and/or space.
Environmental barriers included smoothing out setting changes such as people moving in or out of the program, developing community relationships, changing groups and other challenges, receiving new work in the workshop, or achieving particular program benchmarks.
As one last example, we focused on attitudinal barriers. People learned to accept responsibility for their affect, which effects self and other. A few areas of professional assistance were in limiting the number of people or distractions in the groups, administering satisfaction surveys, and assisting in the establishment of healthy goals.
Our Safety
St. Rose Center addresses safety by various means such as safety inspections (internal and external), analysis of critical incidents, health and infection control plans, emergency hospital transportation plans, environmental health and safety, first aid/CPR training, and analysis of emergency evacuation and disaster procedures. Our safety meets the US Department of Labor OSHA standards.
We are proud of our ability to meet safety standards. For example, we pass well external inspections, which include the State Fire Marshall, Fox Valley Fire Extinguisher Company, Crose company (boiler), the City of Chicago , Christian Brothers’ Risk Management, IDHS, CARF, Community Service Option (CSO) and others hired to assess safe practices and find excellent end results.
All internal inspections are completed by the safety committee, which includes all staff and administrator and is chaired by Mr. Rich Prykop. Many of the internal “fix-up” work is completed by and credited to Mr. John Ondracek, a parent volunteer. The safety committee attunes itself to looking for dangerous or unhealthy patterns prior to problems developing so that we can prevent injury or harm.

Our Policies and Procedures
St. Rose Center has a very comprehensive set of policies and procedures. We found ourselves this year formalizing some policy and procedure issues we had taken for granted. For example, “Abuse and neglect” are now separated from the Behavioral policy. The newer version states specifically that the center is a mandatory reporter. Another policy dedicates us to promoting safety on the job placement sites.
Other areas that have changed since the national survey were the needs for policies and procedures on humiliation and retaliation. Each of these policies looks more closely at safeguarding the rights of individuals’ and staff. Our new policy on humiliation is stated as preserving the individuals’ peace, dignity and worth as a human being. The policy on retaliation safeguards the rights of individuals or staff to make formal complaints without concern over losing their position.
Another change was in our policy and procedure on confidentiality. The updated version supports confidentiality while executing the management and performance improvement reports. And, there is a new privacy policy stating the individuals’ right to be alone. Part of that policy is that the individuals also have a responsibility of respecting the privacy of others.
Our Service Delivery
Our first service delivery objective is to establish identifiable needs and goals based on input received from individuals served and their families.
Second, assessments are made as the St. Rose Center team interacts with the individual. The individuals are showered with various opportunities within the center’s established five domains of learning. The domains are achievement, social, personal, community, and living and the activities change every 30 – 60 minutes.
Third, the individual is guided toward successful task accomplishment, steered toward development of skills and abilities, or discovers their own “planned or surprised” personal or professional aim.
Fourth, information is again gathered; we look at and attempt to measure program affect on the individual.
Last, we assemble new ideas to approach and challenge the individual again each day and each hour through private goals or the general work necessary in processing the many learning opportunities.
Our goal is to have a positive program effect on the individual served so that he or she is learning to better operate as an independent individual and become more capable, desiring, and ready to be out in the community meeting and relating to new people and new circumstances without being jarred.
The program effect indicators come from the annual meeting/goals, testing, surveys, outings and events, and notes and observations made by the DSPs and QHSPs. The program itself has been adopted, revised, and improved through time. It first originated from St. Rose School serving children, which operated for 45 years previous. St. Rose Center began with 11 individuals and is now serving approximately 50 adults with developmental disability.

Comments/Suggestions
My daughter is interested in working out in the community near her house. She also would like to have her own apartment.
Everything is fine at this time, thanks.
Communication skills, computer skills
My daughter looked a little bored in the computer class doing what was programmed. I know she is slow learning, maybe doing something a little different will alert her and keep her awake.
Make [survey questions] 1-5 [rather] than yes/no. I would like to see my son develop relationship with his peers. It seems hard for him to have real conversation with them. I think more focus on playing games, puzzles, or talking about topics with prompts would be helpful.
Needs more activities like volleyball; more exercises, do sit-ups etc., more speech and reading
I am satisfied with the program St. Rose Center is providing my daughter. She loves going to the program and enjoys the field trips.
My sister enjoys the activities at St. Rose Center. She has always enjoyed various kinds of artistic expression.
Cooking, computers, words, check smartestore.com for computer discs.
More money and math work. My daughter does not comprehend $6 as bills vs. $5. She thinks $5 is more. Please work on this. In addition, reinforce time. 3 pm and 4 pm, etc., she doesn't know if that is 1 hour. My daughter constantly needs reinforced skills of this nature.
My daughter's QHSP and I have already talked about the group not working for her. I believe that in July there will be new clients and something will be changed either with the instructor or another group. My daughter dislikes working with the tags and the blue bags. Something should change for the better.
Everybody is doing a great job!
Because of the extent of interest in my daughter, it's hard for me to tell you something you don't already know.
My daughter loves magazines, colorful pictures, McDonald cartons, paper, and some of the tags.
Social skills are improving - I would like to see my son take initiative instead of being asked or helped - stronger motor skills.
