We've married our Domains to Bloom's work!!
Good morning … It’s I. Heheheh … just wanted to be different. It’s Saturday morning and we’ve obviously slept in because the clock says its about 15 minutes to 7 am. We should have our coffee in about 2 minutes. *Sigh* We’re such a regular we are. Aha! It’s ready.Good good … brought a garbage bag back with me. I don’t collect a whole lot on the side desk because there’s only about 1 square foot of space, but I can fill that up. I had gotten lazy about bringing in the bag after we’d emptied it last time … ok, rectified. Little thing. We took the extra cups and glasses out too. Just feels better. We should probably run our dishwasher today amongst other things. Hmm, take medicine soon too? Ok, now we’re starting to get a little grumbly about it … one thing at a time.
We’re up. That’s the good part.
That’s a funny thought we just drifted for a second and we were thinking about something we’d done long time ago. Back when we were living in the big house, we took on a two year stint at being the editors for the PTO newsletter at my sons’ elementary school. What I was thinking abstractly about was how we managed at the time to put it together. We had a computer, hehehe (apple IIe), but it was before the time of Microsoft Windows programs. My friend had more knowledge and had something to print out clip art, and we had to literally cut and paste pictures within text columns. I was remembering standing at the dining room table trying to balance everything so that it would fit in the required space. I don’t know why that image now comes to mind, but it is kind of funny anyway. Time sure has changed, hmm? I think … well at least I’m not doing school newsletters, but maybe that wasn’t such a far stretch. Seems like something I’d be interested in … remember telling them just please don’t make me bake cookies!
Ok, ok … enough of that one … I wonder what happened to all those people though. We had four major friends back then. Our best friend liked to do homemade stuff like canning and was into back to the Earth type stuff. I think she’d officially been a hippy which we considered pretty darn cool. She was very nice but probably a little closed in her personal thoughts. She made us smile though to talk to and we looked forward to being with her. The second friend was a woman whose husband was voted into being a town’s alderman. That was the closest we ever got to political. She herself was an English teacher at a community college and she’d written a book on English. I was always very impressed with her and all these four people were nice.
The third lady was a woman who did home schooling for her kids and she took on positions within the educational committees for the district on educating gifted kids as were hers. Officially, we’d taken up a position on the same committee and the year previously we’d been on one dedicated to people with mental retardation.
And, the fourth lady was an attorney’s wife who ran the elementary school’s library. She was more like a mother figure. I think we listened to her more than anything. All four ladies were involved in the kids programs as were we and they all knew each other. It was the most fun we’d ever had with neighbors. The first three and us were part of a car pool because each of us had sons in first grade going to a small co-op kindergarten. I was so very grateful for that experience.
It’s funny to think of it now. I always have thought that experience was far from my current one. But, actually being interested in learning enough to participate in it as a parent volunteer in a cooperative experience and to be on those two committees was like a predecessor as to what would come. Now we’re officially in the position as Program Director responsible for learning and we’re just starting out to be what I hope as an excellent 10 year position in my life.
Getting back more in touch with that now … I’d like to say that yesterday was the Administration meeting that officially put things out on the table. My friend had said previously that he’d believe sister was going to give me the position when he heard it with his two ears hehehhe. And, there was also the other Q that it had to go past. I had to remind Sister at the end of the meeting to announce the change.
I had known she was set to do it at this meeting, but she had stood up to leave and had forgotten about it. So she sat down again and stated that there would be a change in that the new Q would take over a caseload. The other Q said something about she had thought she would take over 8-9 people, but Sister said no that she would take over a full caseload … there was some confusion from the other Q. and then sister said no that she was going to take over all of Ann’s caseload, then the other Q started to sputter and before she could say anything sister told her that the new Q would still help out the old Q one day per week. The old Q was extremely appreciative of that new fact and then she quickly asked what will Ann do? Sister said in a very matter of fact way of speaking that I would be Program … and then she paused and I filled in Program Director, but before I finished she had the whole thing down again and repeated it as to bring it more easily to mind next time. She said that in the past when asked that she had put down three of us in that position but that it was now going to be my position. Wooo HOOOO.
That was it … Probably the biggest change in my life for the next 10 years and it happened in that one short paragraph … no more or less fanfare than that, with the exception that when we got back to our offices, my friend asked me to sit down in his office and he paused to congratulate me formally … I think he was still a little stunned how I had managed to get sister to name me to that position, but he hadn’t seen all the years edging toward it that had occurred. I knew I had done the most work toward our program development, but to take on the full position as my only job. Well, there was that one more smidge to the meeting. Sister had made a side note that of course I would be still doing CARF I corrected her in that CARF would be a very distinct portion of my work so that in reality there was one job because CARF was factored into that as was staff training and the Thinking Group. I felt excitement toward it all.
Two days previously I had talked to our friend and had arranged to meet him after this meeting for our own meeting. I had to take care of watching over the lunchroom for my 15 minutes, but other than that I had an hour to talk before my next meeting with the clients at 1 pm. I was very ready for a professional meeting although we had decided to have it in the staff dining room where I could power eat my umm oatmeal at the same time as meet hehehehe oh well maybe it isn’t a real powerful thing to do, but it was convenient. I think my friend wanted to be a little more casual, but other than the oatmeal we were set for a formal meeting. We had brought our official clipboard/legal pad and pen. Nothing says more formal, than be aware I’m taking notes. He wasn’t so sure I think that he had much to say and he conveyed that the topic was too large and would take years to sort out. We had told him we were meeting so he could help us establish some framework to what the position involved.
He without trying actually got to the points we were hoping for all along. He was sketching things in though we reigned him in somewhat from talking about his current problems, but in general I knew he had the order I would need, because he’s been a program manager for such a long time. He knows the stuff instinctively like the back of his hand. I think I am going to cheat for this next part, because I brought the notes home and am going to peek now to see what we managed to capture in spirit of that meeting. Might as well take our medicine while we’re back there … hold on.
Hmm, ok back … it’s now 8:15 am. We got distracted over to the PaperTiger site for a little bit … we were looking for more general information. But, we didn’t find it. I wanted to make sure if I invested $400 in the program for two network systems that I wasn’t going to be depended on the work network and that it meant I could share the network between home and work. I will have to write another letter for support. We’re a little too frustrated with it now to do that. I am thinking that if we do go ahead with getting the double programs that we’ll ask sister to front the cost of the work version and we’ll cover the home version. I like that there is a back-up and I like the part really a lot of flexibility. I don’t want to be bringing the computer back and forth if I can help it I would also like to see that I can transfer to a different computer meaning my little computer to big computer if one of the computers becomes unstable. That’s a big worry. Ok, ok … enough of that for now.
Next, we’d like to get back to the work with notes from our friend’s meeting with us. Let’s take a look at that now. Maybe we can summarize the main points. It was not a long meeting, but there were a few critical things said.
The first thing that happened at the meeting was that we received a little pep talk/lecture on being at the center or on task EVERY day for at least 8 hours. He emphasized that even at death’s doorstop we are at work, although we might pigeon-hole us into our office with the door shut. Since he started with that point, we’ll have to imagine he knew what he was talking about. We have a bad rep right now for disappearing on those days we’re not up to full-speed.
Where I had thought first to establish a job description, he did not argue that point, but he went another route. We did tell him and more specifically talked to Dr. M. about how we gathered information which feeds into this whole paper tiger system.
Our friend said that we needed first to ask ourselves two questions and then to make out from that a list. He said first question is: What is wrong with the center? And, what do I want to change? He said that this then becomes our hypothesis. It develops the methods of what is going to happen. As a side note he said that I would need to learn how to keep in perspective each of the players views. This referred to the Q’s, DSPs, Administrator, clients, and other stakeholders. We always want to be seeing the big picture of where everyone is at. And, this all again will play into our methods.
The biggest part of the meeting then became on developing an outline. He said that we should be coordinating a leadership position by filling-in-the-outline. He said that everything that happens at the center should be developed procedurally. This would include a paperwork trail of all the elements or components. It would be our job to understand the outline and watch for changes. We will need to stay on top of everything and guide the developments within our control. As the outline comes together, things will become systematized. It will be from there we will be able to establish goals of being top notch, going into research, and later someday perhaps publication.
Our friend’s thought on teaching management was that the harder you push at something the less you get. Most changes happen gradually over a long period of time. We will need to set plans with objectives of measuring and reestablishing points of change. When we brought up our wanting to contribute toward domain usage … and we suggested doing it throughout the year, he said that we should be doing it subliminally. He said that we should start using the language and slowly develop it into the changes by introducing it in various conversations, explanations and over time bringing people around gently toward our ideals.
He stated that some of the things we’ll be working with are policies and procedures, staffings, observations/change, content of the program, and management (looking at the end result and devising a method to getting there). He said that many elements are involved such as time, labor, efficiency, cost, etc. and that in my position, we would need to combine all these elements in our outline or plan.
He said that we would need to make decisions without being able to delegate staff to do the work. We were going to have to actuate the changes ourselves. We would also have to do the follow-up, and that one way to make this easier would be to piggy-back projects with other things going on … such as taking advantage of sister stepping in to make a change … such as this week when she changed the schedules with the dance instructor. She did the work, but the change will become part of our program developed.
He reminded us that we can’t let things get so big that we couldn’t handle things or manage them. Last, thing was that we mentioned Dr. M’s main concern during our meeting with him on Thursday. He said that the secret will be in being able to manage or balance the needs of home, work, school, and personal. He said there wasn’t any of this we couldn’t do, but we needed now to do all of them at the same time.
So, that’s that of that. We need to breathe now. That was the summary of the meeting. Now, we have to read between the lines and figure out or integrate it into our next thoughts. I think a key element will be going back to the original thoughts of making an outline and considering the first two questions. Mainly … what is wrong with the program and what is it that I would like to change.
I think there is some concern at the onset that I don’t yet have the right outlined structure of how to pen in these questions. I need to consider that I don’t know what’s wrong with the center, in that as she stands she is running effectively in that people come every day, stuff happens, and it continues with everyone seeming relatively happy. I have to be careful in this respect coming in to make changes, because we don’t want to change the equilibrium. Like our friend said everything changes gradually over time. I have to keep a firm mind on now the word, “outline.”
But, first … we’re going to take a small breather and get some breakfast, more coffee, and review over what we’ve typed so far in review of the meeting with our friend. I know we felt more connected to what he was saying in outline as he was speaking that we’re going to need getting back to. Best to do it right. The time now is 9 am.
Ok … the break was only for 8-10 minutes. We’ve reread the above material and we’re at the point of nodding our head thinking this makes sense without yet comprehending the total of it put together. Toward the end we drifted toward Dr. Marvin’s meeting. I think other things happened, but one of the main things was that we had brought in with us a couple copies of the position paper we’d been working on. The main conclusion of that paper was that we should do it over again, except this time putting it in outline form and doing more to control the flow of information. I tried not to get over concerned in that we sometimes like to just do things and have it done with. That idea was going to take more time … was it important? I think so.
If we combine the two points of our friend having us ask what’s wrong. And Dr. Marvin’s of putting our thoughts in an outline … we realize that both are requesting of us outlines, which by chance is something we might consider if we were doing something for school. This kind of tells us that we have to think more concretely. We’re going to give ourselves credit points in that like the morning routine list we’d come up with … we can do numbered or bullet lists, just that it first took some brainstorming, and then reorganization and this was of course something we are adept at doing. Just need to have a starting off point.
I’m thinking now for the moment hehehe ok, besides being appreciative how strong my typing fingers are … is that we might want to go back and do a quick summary of what our position is as to a job description based on some of the information we’d pulled previously on what a program director does. We are still looking for the outline of what our parameters are. I’m remembering now being frustrated with Sr. in the past and that we’d gotten overwhelmed a long time ago and outlined all the things that we do in our position. So, I’m quite sure we are capable of the task, just need to prioritize and focus. Hmm. That sounds interesting … think we’re going to emphasize that as a key term thought.
“PRIORITIZE AND FOCUS!”
Hehehe ok, that’ll do.
Let’s do it here and now and get on with it. Where did I leave my notes. I thought I’d a typed version on this computer … let’s look. For right now because it is yet to be organized, you might want to skip down to the next bold list that says End List. We’re going to be organizing everything from the middle of begin to end.
While I’m thinking of it too. We want to remember something important Dr. M. had said toward mathamatics which would support something we’d been thinking through. I got to remember now the key word. It was something to do with columns and rows and X/Y coordinates. Hmm. I remember .. “domains.” We were going to look that up … it was under thoughts on how actually is the word domain supposed to be used. Let’s do that now.
Ahh something interesting … Problem: Find the domains of the following function. For example the domain of a particular mathematical composition (algebraic problem) seemed to be the result of (x). AHA … it notes range too. “Range” is the other term Dr. M. used and also sides up next to those x/y coordinates. In the example I am looking at range considered … hmm. Domain seems to pick up the rules for the first problem and the second problem which are going to align. So the range might be the top and bottom values within the domain set.
Function too … a function is a rule or correspondence that associates to each number x in a set A a unique number f(x) in a set B. Sataring with two sets A and B; A is called the domain of f. For each x in A, f determines a unique number in B which is called f(x) … this seems to mean that all functions of A respond the same within B.
The function can be represented symbolically or algebraically due to it having an (x) value. Such as f(x) = x squared is a function. Also, since adding two numbers gives a unique answer, the expression g(x) = x + 5 is a function. It is supposed to be easy finding the domain of a function which is represented symbolically. Hmm, it seems now as domain represents the result of the function’s business. There seems to be two exception problems … 1) division by 0, and 2) square root of a negative number, so being a “number” is not in the domain of a function. The domain of f consists of all real numbers except -1 and 1 (cuz we’ll get 0 in the denominator).
Hmm. Too complicated, but to reconsider the first (x) is in the domain of f, or in another example g(w) … w is in the domain of g. Good pretty clear.
AHA next point … The numerical representation of a function f is just a table of values in which the entries in one row or column is the domain and the entries in the other row or column is the range. So as to Dr. M’s forgetfulness … it seems that domains or range are interchangeable as to being in rows or columns. I still can’t remember in a graph if x is the coordinate laying down or standing up. Hmm. Hold on they’re trying to trick me.
X | f(x)
2|11
F(2) = 11 …
we move 2 over to the function, but its confusing because I don’t see any work getting F(2) to 11 … although it would seem F multiplies 2 … let me go on to see if I can figure that out. It seems for now that there is no multiplication and that the two numbers are representations of just random values on a table.
Ok, moving on to graphical stuff. It says If and only if y = f(x) and G is a coordinate plane where (x, y) are points on that plane. So G is a line putting together all the points of the coordinates x and y. Hmm, no maybe G is the graph, although the line represents still all the coordinate points of x and y.
Graphically they are showing f(x) to be a smaller squared subsection under the line drawn by those of x, and f(x). Ok, domain is all those collective points … if you will so y = f(x) is posted times f(x).
The set of X input values is called the domain of f (function) and Y. the set of possible output values is called the codomain. The range of f is the set of all actual outputs. The function must map every element of the domain to an element of its codomain. Usually when math people use f(x) or domain of f all the value of x are defined. (see above table) … no I’m not going into morphisms … although what comes to mind is what they are doing now days of turning people into wolves or other objects before our eyes. Hehehe.
AHA! This makes sense … a graph! In this situation f(x) moves from one direction left(west) to right(east) or vice versa like a detector of metals is swept over the body in a wand-like manner. This graph has range standing up and domain laying down. The domain laying down is x and the range stading up is f(x) … that means normally Y is standing up too vertical and x lays down horizontally. Let’s do a wonderful little picture about here …
Ok, THAT – Makes things simple! Domain sweeps sideways and range sweeps up and down. … Also interesting a domain in topology is a connected open set. Gosh darn near anything they throw into x! AHA … and to be a function you can only have one arrow going from x to y … and only one y per x ... or its not a function! And, you can say all those specific x’s like 2, 5, -7, 0 are elements of the domain. And, there has to be a relation … can’t have a domain without a corresponding y like range. Kind of puts things in dimension properly. AHA a test … trick test … If {2,3), (2, -2)} then it is not a function since x – 2 goes to both y=3 and y = -2) if you graphed this then there would be a straight line drawn up and down and that is a test to say there is no function … like above x can only go to one y or another 3 or -2. See above how the squiggly red line moves across, but it never stands straight up! … Some great snapshots here … hold on.
Ok … see first picture shows (2,3) dot on top and (2-2) dot on bottom. Second picture shows them lining up vertically when a line is drawn. This is the test which says if it goes straight up and down it is not a function. The third picture you don’t see any of that swoop line crossing the same up and down space … just like the drawing up above the last paragraph … that makes it a function. BUT, on the fourth drawing with the oval you can draw many straight up and down lines across the oval … so that means it is not a function.
Hmm, one more interesting thing. I’m looking at my last look-up but they’ve labeled a diagram as the “Cognitive Framework of mathematical proficiency – The four essential domains.” This could be useful. We could say then “The St. Rose Center Program – The five essential domains.” I better grab-up that picture too … think its significant for a model of our program. Not that we’re going to use math functions per see, but in how things work in relation to each other. I’ve long since known that if any thought is going to pass the mustard it has to work in all applications … Hehehehe which turns out to be a subset of problem-solving … pretty cool, hmm? This is where we get our intelligence is our willingness to collectively work through problems. Just like when we started we scanned 5 or 6 sites which used domains … In a few moments will go back to the same thing to describe our first version of program director and equally by the way how the Internet or Paper Tiger best work in our favor, they can assist us in bringing together like ideas or concept – knowledge to then according to Bloom’s taxonomy comprehend, apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate. Hmm, seems something now like self-regulation? We’ll have to line that up later to check it out … for now a picture finalizing this set of thoughts and then lets go on to the others.
Remember to skip to the end if you don’t want to go through the middle. Hehehe
Problem with this Cognitive picture is that … I can’t quite fit it to Bloom, but its close. The domain of problem-solving leads to application … conceptual knowledge leads to analysis, and reasoning ability leads to synthesis. Maybe the image itself is knowledge … just seeing it straight forward … figuring out the meaning is comprehension, but there is no use yet of the skill except to say that it parallels problem-solving in that it’s a thing done while problem solving … sort of like the graph’s specialty. Hmm, that works for us. Does make it easy to slide in anything else … such as developmental disability programming. I like that. Ok, no time to study that now … its already 10:50 and time to progress forward …
One more small note … the value of the above will be in cross-applying it to our work. Hmm, let me see for a moment if I can follow it.
First I can now say that everything in the program goes through the domains … note how they fill the center of the diagram above. They each collectively sit together, but go out forming their own outline. I’m not sure what to make yet of the dispositional relevancies. It seems to say that … all the above leads towards this … but, I’m not real keen yet on the direction as to being a final result. I like totalitarian solutions hehehe. I do like the combination of math and psychology … I think that makes an interesting cross-over. For sure this picture is something to study further.
As to domains … J think I favor a 5-spoked wheel … hmm can I diagram that … sure! Hold on … hmm, maybe then the outline or legs from them would be the pieces of bloom’s.
WoooHOOOOOOOO!!! I did it … I came up with something and I LOVE it! There is a full bloom* pardon the pun version, but we’ll shrink it down to fit here … LOOK!
Iapologize for using the center rather than the name, but in real life the name of the center shows up. So consider this copyrighted! AHA! Now … to go to the bathroom and get one more cup of coffee.
Pshwoo that is done … Ok, we’re going to continue now boldy on, but this time we are going to REALLY connect to the PROGRAM DIRECTOR POSITION. But, first we will post because it is my understanding that as soon as something is published it is yours and locked down by any copyright. Better get this baby then to press!
Umm save this next part … well cipher it out next and upcoming post.
