Let's move on, but never past the Foyer & Office, K?
Good morning … it’s me! It’s about 4:20 am and we’ve been up for a while. Rich just went back to bed … he’s been up since about 4 am when his guy called the first time to tell him he wasn’t coming in today and that was backed up by a second call. Sheesh … I wouldn’t call the boss that early! But, for the record it is pretty bad out there. I wish I had my camera to take a picture of the over-hang off our roof …It’s about a foot and a half of blowing and drifting snow. This is the forecast:

We’re really, really hoping Sister is going to have a snow day. Rich says if she’s going to have one – today would be the day. But, we wouldn’t get all day, because we have a 1:30 pm appointment at UIC with Dr. Berger. But at least part of the day being off would be very, very nice … Hmm? Sister though has been taking over the last couple of years the attitude, well come in if you want – and then most the staff comes in and it makes me who doesn’t look bad and then I am the one who doesn’t get paid. Hmpf! We’ll see.
Just prepared a note for sister of the above, but we’ll wait a little longer – maybe until 5 am … it doesn’t look like she’s signed on and I want to give her the freshest information. I know she goes to her own sources and she’s pretty hesitant on calling off the program because it means a change of schedule for everyone.
Parents, transportation, clients, etc.
Hmm, we’ve now just been playing with weather maps … nothing real good there. It’s almost 5 am now. Shoot only half an hour to write and we thought we were going to get in something special today. I’m afraid she’s not going to cancel. We had gone looking for a close of Chicago schools, but I don’t think that’s happened. Don’t know the school district.
WOOHOOO!!! We stuck it out and NOW we GOT the call we were LOOKING FOR!!! PROGRAM CLOSED FOR THE DAY WOOHOOOO SNOWDAY!!!!
And, hey for the record … I’m showed and dressed AND ready for work on time … Sr. said I wouldn’t get two feet from the door hehehe she called that score right! It’s really bad out there. So far 730 schools have closed though the big one has not gone down. That being – Chicago school district is still open – those idiots! They are going to hear about that from angry parents. Everything is delayed and plows just can’t keep up and the side streets aren’t getting plowed – listened to news for about 10 minutes. There are going to be some angry parents. Longer they wait to close the angrier they are going to be because they won’t be able to make plans.
They should have called in by 6 am – just no excuse it’s very wild out there weather-wise. It will be messed up for days.
You can imagine the first one we woke up was our dear fishyman, but umm he had his more umm serious voice when he said, PLEASE don’t jump on the bed … oh I’m sorry … you were sleeping here? I’ll smooch you instead … I’m sorry. My poor baby … look what he goes through! Oh for the record? Not only is the snow coming down, the overhang is still growing and still like 3 ½ hours and no snow trucks although the cars are not parked down there because they figured out there would be plowing over night. There’s only about 3 feet of clearance from the overhang to the railing. I think it’s going to block out our daylight! Oh daylight melts the blockage … good thinking! Well, we were just saying is all. We’re hoping to be here when it goes down … we’re hoping that its going to make an avalanche sound. I suggested to Rich that we poke it with a broom before it gets heavier, but then he says that we take on responsibility for it – better to leave it go naturally.
AHA! We did a good Ann. We called the building people and let them know that it had built up and suggested they came over and knocked it down safely before it took down the gutters. It’s about 6:30 am, and I’m sure they are busy snow plowing, but maybe when they come over to do the driveway, they will take a look at it. Place is pretty respectable if we shut the bedroom doors. Might have to move the little Christmas tree. Rich will probably say we should have left it alone, but we’re not that type people. We never leave ANYTHING alone. Matter of fact we’ll probably come back in our next life as a sore tooth!
AHA! Chicago Tribune just reported in … They say “Hazardous rush; more snow expected” And then go on to add, “A winter storm bringing around 8 to 12 inches of snow to the Chicago area, causing problems at airports and on area roadways, is expected to pick up steam for the Friday morning rush hour. “It looks like this morning’s rush hour is going to be really impacted,” National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Merzlock said. “With what’s going to be coming down at the rate it’ll be coming down, all the roads are going to be snow packed and snow covered.””
See that’s just what we were saying … dumb Chicago school district … you just wait … we’ll read you tomorrow how mad the “civilians” are! HMPF!
Ahh look at this … we were looking at some pictures of that people sent to CHICAGO NBC yesterday … this one is really cool.
Nice, Hmm?
I love sun sparkles!!! This one’s a beaut!
I think what’s happening with our mind otherwise is that we’re operating out of a vacuum. When we get too boggled it starts sucking up our mental energy … yes I think we’re goin with that story. Rich is due up in 5 minutes. He said after we agreed that he could go back to sleep that he was going to sleep til about 7 am. So we have been good there. My coffee is almost out and we need to go take our medicine. We also just figured the cool stuff we saved yesterday we didn’t email to ourselves, so we’re going to need to go look it up again today which is fine … maybe we should take a running tab of it anyway … think someone is spending a LOT of pretend money! I think that will be easy enough … we’re spending from the same store. We’re going to ask for a discount In the meantime we pulled up our email from Operational Intelligence (OPINTEL) that reminded us of a conversation Dr. M kinda pushed last night …
He was pretty much sure we should talk about why we wanted to talk about house and furniture instead of talking about Thom leaving for the Marines’. We told him about going so far into it that we’d gotten something that told us about Intelligence Lessons, but then yesterday morning at our computer at work there was some kind of code message from some government source checking us out. I think someone erased it before we could really erase it, because it scared us. We didn’t want any part of that. But, for the record, we think that we better not post the email to our blog … although we’re still thinking it over … better give it a once more look-over to see what we have.
Hmm, we’ll just say a few basics. Basically it’s lessons on their primary objectives to provide, describe, conduct, and perform intelligence to support naval planning. The really amazing part? I won’t go into the details of what makes the lesson, but it is broken down like it might in a legal document, or in general a boy scout merit badge, or a well-laid goals and objective plan for people with dev disabilities. First do this, then this, then that. They go down the list somewhat like with Bloom stating Apply, Use, Store, Manipulate, Create, etc. and apply those verbs to situations of learning. I don’t think good teaching in any order should be much different. It should pertain to thinking and applicable processes that interconnect logic and ability. But, of course … that’s just the way our thinking works.
So, better stop that for the time being CUZ … we’re 10 minutes from waking up Sweetie Pie
Ok, ok … lots of news to report … think we’re going to be settling in for the morning. For the record Sweetie is still home too, until at least getting ready for his 1:30 appointment if that isn’t cancelled too. BUT as you know work was cancelled AND by our good luck … our Dr. appointment was just cancelled as well. The appointment was rescheduled for next Friday the 8th at 1:30 pm. Oh man BONANZA!!!
We’re cookin!!!
So, three day weekend JUST LIKE THAT!! The only thing I know about Rich’s schedule so far is that he’s planning on working on work all morning, he’s got that meeting most likely early afternoon, and he’s got personal bills to work on as well. AND, he said that he wants to get out and play some poker with Bob and the guys this evening. Eh. That’s ok, with us. Plus though … I think he said he’s going to be tied up the rest of the weekend. I just know about the part where he’s going to go to the Super Bowl party with his friend Jack and Doug and others on Sunday. Who knows what else. He’s had to cancel many games this week due to his sore leg … turns out he’s had umm something aha … that’s it sciatic nerve problems so been taking it light though I don’t think that’s meant we really got too much extra time together. I’m not sure … have to look for notes.
So. Anyway looking for time by ourselves. I think the Rich being busy part had mostly to do with can’t go look at houses because he was too busy. Maybe that’s just a smokescreen, but maybe it’s reasonable too … not sure … we’re like obsessed mode anyway … don’t think it matters with what … just like how we’re processing life right now. I don’t know how good a control Dr. Marvin has on it. I do know that we had a session with him last night and it seems that the first 40 minutes was spent talking on the place out in Elgin and a little the place in Chicago, and he had to really push to get in a little talk on Thom … Oh, I’m being told we had this conversation? Let me check? Ok, a little into this. Anyway … being true to mind … I think it’s time … let’s go into the home buying thing again.
As to the Dr. Marvin part. I think he was very patient with us … he looked at pictures with us and later we teased that we must certainly be more fun than most his patients because we didn’t think most of them brought in visuals. We had pictures scattered all over the place and we had him read through most of the entry written yesterday, because we enjoyed our excitement even if written in a short amount of time. Thought it very reflective of our excited feelings. I don’t think Dr. Marvin ever really commented on our decorating style … and we didn’t really ask for his comment. Our general thought there is that he has different tastes. We think by his office décor that he’s more modern and simplistic where we’re much more apt to use scroll’s and columns and lots of wood. That all part was good.
We also showed Rich SINCE he was just waiting to have his screen warmed up … our general pictures and light dialogue of room decorations this morning. He was patient after he figured out we weren’t going anywhere until satisfied. We did conclude that we were willing to use the materials as an opening dialogue as to this is our tastes, now what is your tastes. He made a comment about not knowing what his tastes were and then it got muddled somewhere because he’d never gotten to figuring it out – because he never made it through the preliminary part – and we were like umm 35 years of marriage??? How preliminary does it get? And, I said well then this is our opening dialogue … this is what I like. What do you like? But, he was a fishy not willing to nibble on that worm. Shoot!
I think there’s potential for it in the future. I think he was listening and liked some of our ideas. We’ll start that run-through in a few moments. Because maybe this will never work and we’ll never get the place with Rich of our and his imagination, but it all starts with a dream and like everything else we do it all starts somewhere … and if you don’t dream it … it’s hard to say it will come. I am the belief that we are a good part of creating our own destiny.
So with no further adieu! We are going to start with another sketch … and apologize if you’ve seen this before, but we’re doing another master floor plan of the main Somerset home. Then you can if you would, please refer back to it as we talk about decorating the rooms with odd pieces of furniture.
Ok, sure that’s fine … get Sweetie some more coffee first and turn on some tunes … I think today is a Like John, Harry, Mary, Joni, & Sir Paul day. We’ll see how that goes. Sweetie said something about not being so good to him, but he makes the delight in sunshiny!
*Sigh*
Ok, now on to business.
First we’re going to start with a familiar item … I think you are all familiar with the house layout.
We didn’t have a chance to go over things more slowly the other day. We’ll take it more light today. First … We saw the 2 car version when we were out the other day.
Of course you fall for the first version you see … and this was the one we looked at on paper first too so, we’re remarkably happy with it. We are going to try holding ourselves to a more business mode, but indescribable comes to mind in remembering back to walking in and seeing the light and space – everything flows from the second you walk into the first step of space. Just incredible.
Ok … so now we move on to the decorating. We’re going with just furniture for now and by that I mean major furniture. Little stuff can be picked up as we go to help settle and gel things together … We haven’t figured out how to do the primary collection, but pretty much because we just thought of it. Basically, we knew the hallway collection was going to be for fishing lures and reels and other small interesting fishy things. So … this is the foyer layout
Please note the wainscoting that is painted White, ok we’re doing a little of the underdecorating. The major theme colors will be the mossy green and the double rosy colors of my curtains which I love whether or not I can find a spot for the curtains hanging now in my living room or not. I’m thinking they might be ok now in the garden room windows … actually … they might be quite fine there if we can hold to the color scheme! But, sticking to the foyer … you too are going to need trying like the dickens not taking in the tremendous sights ahead because the great room does its best to DRAWWWW you in beseeching you to explore and plunder its depths!
BUT, not yet!
To the left is a double set of French doors with a transom leading into a mysterious room, but first you can’t help, but noticing to the right a triumphious image of a mirror and two matching display cabinets – whoops ONE display cabinet … just measured that out. Not enough room and don’t want to jam up the space. The mirror is
(Horchow Floor Mirror HCOF8_D6018 - $699 + $205 del 68”Wx6”Dx91”T Bronze 8-10 Weeks)
Wow … large break here. It’s now 4:15 pm … Rich is gone and we’ve had an early dinner. I’m not sure what all has happened since we’ve been gone. I know that when we’ve been at the computer we’ve looked at this picture of the mirror – so rather been studying it. It’s very hard to see it through all the other mish-mosh, but I suppose that’s part of it … you want to catch everything up. Going back to our original ideas – we had decided only to use one curio, because there was only a 19” difference between mirror and ONE curio … this is again the one that we were looking at … please excuse the statistical stuff figured one of these times we should catch up with it so we can go back and reference it one day. Ok, so here is the curio.
(Everything Furniture Curio China – Wood Furniture 1621-22-G [$829 - $41.45 5% dis + del $163.73 = $951.28] 51.5”Wx19.5”Dx54”H Tradewinds Pine 1-3 Weeks)
I think the mirror is simple enough in design, but might need one without bronze later, but the general idea is to find one that is large to go in back of the curio. I absolutely love this item! It is a “HOT” item! This is the one that is going to hold all the fishy stuff … just the little ones – maybe Rich would make his first exhibit a series of lures with little displays of their names that I can study until I learn all their names. Yes, that would be a good idea, hmm? But, I would like him to fill in the display sort of like one fills in an aquarium so that the whole of it makes sense … Yup, yup … love fishyman this much.
I imagine a little corner that people stop and say – oh what is this? “Oh it is so cute! What are all those little fishy things?” or “What a good idea! I had no idea!” Meanwhile the uncertainty of entering a strange home is wearing off and everyone has those few moments to get comfortable. For fishyman? Eh … Maybe a place to place his keys!
Want him to feel or claim being HOME! Hmm, maybe this is where we can leave two lights burning? Hehehe just saw the two candles.
One way or another the curio is in front of the mirror and they are both to the right of the door and across from the office door. The cabinet comes up to 4 ½ feet so it is about a foot shorter than the top of my head … just enough to catch my hair – umm there will be a brush in one of those drawers. On either side of the curio – you will be able to spot check your attire without seeing too much which would make placement of the mirror seem too obvious. Plus of course the door, the ceiling and some of the wainscoting will be seen as well the floor. We’ll have to ask Rich on the floor. I’m leaning on Wood in the formal rooms, but the tile in the hall, kitchen, garden room, and baths. It’s not that I’m against carpet totally, but I really like a good wooden floor and I’m against the mess made on carpets or the cost of replacing them saying nothing of the task of matching colors and cycles of one’s temperament. YEEKS! Woodens best … nice and clean! It’s a lot easier to replace rugs and I feel more secure with furniture sitting on wood whether it is wood or not.
Ok, let’s take a leap of faith we are going to bypass the beauties that are awaiting us toward the great hall and instead we are going to look in on the office.
Directly ahead is the office … man this is a major chore! Ok, think we got our stuff put together now.
We’re going to label the walls as per how we are seeing them pretty much per room to make this easier to explain. We had come in from the foyer from the east. I’d like to think unless there was a personal meeting going on in there that the double French doors mostly remain open. The look about 36” a piece or 6’ across, but those numbers are guessing. We do know the room is 14’ long and the majority of the room is to the left or south of the doors.
(Everything Furniture Office Furniture DMI 72 Inch Shaped Exec Desk 7688-36-G [$1,840.10 - $184.02 + $363.44 = $2,019.60] 72”Wx36”Dx30”H Bordeaux Cherry 1-3 Weeks)
I like how the model had the main desk like the one above going east to west. There is 96” left from the 14’ and the desk is 36” deep so that leaves 60” or 5’ split between eigther side. We have to check that space. The desk is 6 feet from the wall – so it extends about a foot past the window. The window is about 4’ wide so 3’ is clear and the one covered by the desk is fine. The right double door swings back over the back side of the closet so it is fine. The left side will have to balance the 3’ with the five extra feet between door guard, visual to desk, and back area where Rich will be getting up and down from his desk. One idea might be to move the desk further toward the west wall so that the door clears flat so that the desk can be pulled forward and the desk then just doesn’t come in contact with the east wall. Hmm, ok can do that. Now, the next consideration. We don’t want to go too far, but In the sw corner we are going to want to put a nice – very nice two drawer laternal file with a very special gold marble top – here just a sec … what do you thing? I’m thinking small unobtrusive plant lite and something green! Hehehe
(Everything Furniture Office Furniture DMI – Two Drawer Lateral File with marble Top – Exec Office Furniture Home Office Furniture – 7688-17-G [$875.55 - $43.78+$172.92 = $1,004.69] 36”Wx21 ½”Dx30”H Bordeaux Cherry 1-3 Weeks)
I figure I’m in about 2’ off each wall. The next part is to work on the west wall.
The big items here are the Credenza and Hutch … They are both about 72” or another additional 6’
Hmm, been doing a little messing around … I think we’ve about got it. I think I can do things more squarely. Well, whether or not the file has to come at an angle to allow for desk clearance would depend if the desk needs to go 6” or 12” from the wall. BUT, the thing is the credenza/hutch would go 2’ north of an extended hutch or basically – even 4’ north of the south wall and 4’ south of the north wall. It would also extend about 2 feet toward the east wall, but leave about 10 feet toward that. I think we’re good. These are those two pieces. Really nice one obviously on top of the other.

There are just two more pieces now … well actually 5 pieces … I forgot about the chairs. Rich will have the regular desk the one on the south wall and we will have the credenza and hutch on the west wall. We did that because he uses more desk space and he uses the laptop where we have the two monitors. Actually, we switched over office furniture and it took us a long time to figure it out … Every set has it’s own sets that have high and low benefits. We didn’t originally like all the curves on this piece, but we came back to it along with the more blunted corner created by the tiger paw corners instead of the column. That was a major architectural change from the original.
I thought that this second hutch had a wider opening for the monitors, or at least it seemed to be higher, so there would be more room to balance them on the top of the credenza. I liked there was some light coming down from the top, but I’m not sure if there is any on the top shelve and I liked that on the other. I thought the first looked too simple when I was looking at it today - too geometric and light in color. It only took on a medium complexity in comparison to the furniture I’d placed in the hallway. I had to dress things up a bit. I liked the brass pulls the Edging on the flat surfaces, the panels, the effect of the veneer cuts, the sweeping curves, the color of the cheery stained wood – a whole lot of things. Plus I liked the variety of pieces I was offered. It looked like an interesting piece like one that would have sneaky treasure drawers in it. I love how new designs are mimicking old designs. It’s wonderful. But, as you note the prices are reflecting the cost.
I should add the other pieces … Rich just called … he’s on his way back. He was up a couple games and had had enough I guess. He’s bringing back a movie and looking for dinner. It’s about 7:30 pm now. The Next piece on the north wall is a tall bookshelf with lights. It’s very sleek and sassy!

She’s the one that turns the pieces into pie!
The conference table then sits in front of the credenza and bookshelves, but there is a couple of feet. It is only about 42” or 3 1/2’ wide. It’s round and on a beautiful pedestal. We’ll have to cover it with something and still be able to write on it. Not to over do it, but sometimes I’ll need flat surface, or Rich and I’ll have to talk over things. Think it should have a felt/padded top. Surprises me for the prices that they are not a little more giving or protective. Here she is.

You can tell she’s a Balmoor through and through. This is the 42” table … they make a 48,” but we’re already running into space problems. Sheesh how fast rooms fill up! The last additions to the rooms, but not least are the chairs … we went with a couple different things here. The hardest to pick were the side chairs to go with the tables. We wanted something to go nicely with the table … so we ended up back scavenging through
Umm, little break my mother called. We will continue this tomorrow.
Ok … we’re going to just put the chairs part here and then we’ll cut over to the next day’s entry proper. The scavenging part was that we went through the chairs over in the dining section and w found a set that we were very comfortable with … like everything … we find we have expensive tastes. We figure that we are way beyond Rich’s pocket book with this house. We are going to need coming up with a kazillion dollars on our own and then we’ll just hand our decorator associate our notes go on vacation for several months and let him worry out the hassles. Fair enough. These are the chairs we found for the office table. We just need two.

They are exactly what we wanted in a set of side chairs … we worry about them being closeout specials – I hope we’ll be able to get them somewhere! Let’s add the last two chairs before we go for the final summary – well until at least we summarize over until the Sunday morning’s entry. Somehow think we have to a collective picture.
Hmm, we’re back … we’re whittling into the morning already … it’s already 9:22 am Rich and us have been together for a while. He got out of the washroom and then we mmm well and then an hour or so went by and then we came out and watched some morning news shows … and then he went into the kitchen to look at his computer and we did the dishes and picked up in the kitchen and now we are to here. There’s more to say, but I want to finish those last two chairs on this page so I can get to posting and move on with the new entry, HMPF!

Hehehe you can tell the king from the queen chair, right? Nah … we’re still from the old era where we like the guys always to be treated just a little bit nicer … just stuck with a lack of feminism. They pretty much roll down the street the same way though! Mine’s better on the curves!
