Gettin Stuff Done Before the Trip :)

Good morning … It’s me again. Yup yup … hard to get rid of me cuz we keep coming back. We had our V. talk but am still working on our first cup of coffee. Still a buzz about the shopping trip. Yup, yup … done good … we emailed our sweetie pie about it … We want to take stuff out and try it on again, but we’re thinking that its already Thursday and if I were smart, I’d just leave things in the bag and take to Ohio as is. Everything is clean, wrinkle free and so to speak already packed. We figure that’s a pretty good deal … shoot, shoot though am going to want to show our friend when he comes in.

Hehehe … we just peeked … But, we didn’t take things off the hanger! Hmm, sure would be nice to put on something new though … you know … give it a trial run? Should be taking our shower right now if we’re going to be ready for the car … hmm, better look at the GPS thingy first … hold on.

Ok all that is done. Spent some time in “synching” her. It shows up on the memory card, but not on the program list … seemed to have gone through ok though. We’ll see. I boxed everything up and took it to the mechanic with us. He’s going to have a look at it. Might need to put a new fuse in the lighter too. He’ll know about that. It’s nice to have her in the shop … We’re hoping now that it won’t be too much money. But, we’ll just have to wait it out. Tried on our super-duper new tennis shoes YAYYYYY!!! Next thing is next … we’re going to have to get back to the papers. I’m behind again. Need to be able to concentrate. Shoot … this is the hard stuff … maybe some music.

Ahh, back to the regular stuff. Tried out i-tunes yesterday … I was listening up to some kind of music that promised not to jar my medicine levels. Hehehe … uh huh … well anyway…

We talked to Macadam for about 90 seconds. It turns out he got the job he wanted working back down at the Board. He had to go though … so just let him know we’ll be gone … and that’s pretty much that. He said he forgot to tell me. We’re going to pretend that didn’t hurt. I know, I know … let it go.

Ok ok … don’t do that … move on.

Oh I like this song … Perhaps love is like a resting place a shelter from the storm. It is there to give you comfort it is there to give you warmth. Like a fire when it is cold outside. Perhaps love is like the ocean full of conflict full of pain. And some says love is holding on and some letting go and some say everything and some say they don’t know. If I should live forever and all my dreams come true my memories will be all of you. My memories of love will be of you. Hehehehe … well not all in that order, but something like that.

Ok, its 9 am … we got to do this paper … we don’t have the PDA to tell us, but we know. Where did we leave off. What do we have to do?

Ok, first thing … is figure out where we left the assignment … umm probably in the Word, maybe in our school file? We better look there. Hmm, someone was pretty organized … filed it under a file called “final classwork for cognitive.” I figured that had to be it. I think we were on u08d02 Tools of Logic.

This is what we have to do ….

Define modus ponens, modus tollens, denying the antecedent, and affirming the consequent arguments. Give specific examples of each to show the distinctions. What is the difference between universal and particular arguments?

Oh yah I remember ponens and tollens. *Sigh* Ok, you! You know you have fun after you start, so you just have to start. It says pages 403-442 … let’s find that. Oh, ok page 419. We’re getting closer … coffee? We’re not going to pet that pesky chief … he wants to lie on our book. Sometimes he can be so procrastinate.

Ok … got coffee, cleaned off desk … got smokes. Music. Courage? Ok … I can do this. Next, we gotta do this:

Paper …

Modus Ponens is when you affirm the antecedent (first part of the proposition) in an argument, such as if “p, then q. p. Therefore, q.” (Sternberg, 2003). An example would be (p) if I get my car fixed, then (q) the car mechanic will charge me. p  q. q. Therefore p. Or, (p) I got my car fixed; therefore (q) the mechanic charged me. “A Modus Ponens is a logically valid form of a conditional argument” (Corsini, 2000).

Modus Tollens is when you deny the consequent (second part of the proposition), so in this argument you have the p  q, but not q. Therefore not p. So, (p) if I get my car fixed, then (q) the car mechanic will charge me. The car mechanic did not charge me; therefore I didn’t get my car fixed (2003). “A Modus Tollens is a logically valid form of a conditional argument” (2000).

Where Modus Ponens affirms the antecedent and denies the consequent, you cannot reach a valid conditional argument by using the deductive fallacies of denying the antecedent and affirming the consequent (Sternberg, 2003). So in this case, called denying the antecedent, we would say p q. Not p. Therefore not q. Or, (p) if I get my car fixed, then (q) the car mechanic will charge me. I didn’t get my car fixed; therefore the mechanic didn’t charge me. Denying the antecedent is not a valid form of a conditional argument; the conclusion is invalid (2003).

In the same respect, the next case “affirming the consequent” is p  q, q. Therefore p. Or, (p) if I get my car fixed, then (q) the car mechanic will charge me. The car mechanic charged me; therefore my car was fixed. Affirming the consequent is also not a valid form of a conditional argument; the conclusion is invalid (Sternberg, 2003).

In one more set of examples:

Modus Ponens – If I did a good job, I will get a raise. I did a good job; therefore I got a raise.

Modus Tollens – If I did a good job, I will get a raise. I did not get a raise; therefore I did not do a good job.

Denying the antecedent – If I did a good job, I will get a raise. I did not do a good job; therefore I will not get a raise.

Affirming the consequent – If I did a good job, I will get a raise. I got a raise; therefore I did a good job.

If the symbol p is a condition, and the symbol q is an action, “then this conditional is known as a production rule” (Liu, 2003). This rule has been used on numerous occasions to model procedural and cognition knowledge and to “simulate cultural adaptation” (2003). In fact, Scholnick and Wing (1991) completed a study on the use of the word “if” used by preschoolers. They found that if adults used “semantic, syntactic, and suppositional properties of “if,” then important linguistic and conceptual developmental information could be gained primarily in the child’s ability to use logic and reason. Indeed, they found that if adults used the condition then children would as well showing logical maturity, understanding, and the affect of scaffolding (1991). They also found that teachers used more often then parents an children the condition of “if” behaviorally, which might explain the child’s learning adaptation. Most often the preschoolers related the inferences made to themselves (1991).

Universal arguments means that all “members of the categories” were included, or none of the members of the categories were included (Sternberg, 2003), and particular arguments means that only some members of the categories were included, or some of the members were not included. So, in this case:

All Ann’s parts are girls. All girls are Ann’s parts. Not equal

None of my books are small books. None of the small books are my books. Equal

Eating some pecan pie is a good idea. Sometimes a good idea is eating pecan pie. Not equal.

Some kitties are not black kitties. Some black kitties are not kitties. Not equal.

Yup, yup happier in the second picture. Whoops! Call Grandma!!!

*Sigh* We’re on a *wait* for a second. We started to talk to T, but she was called off by the phone. She might be gone for a while. We’re guessing T could talk up a storm. That’s ok … Where’d we leave off. AHA! We’d done our paper … disappeared into the day and now it is now.

Hmm, we didn’t say too much before we went off to do the paper. Pretty big day for getting stuff done. We knew that our friend was coming over. It seemed like such a small bit of time. I think he was here from like noon to three. He made a few dinners while we showered, then we had a sandwich, and then we umm … well you know … ANYway … Something came up with a number this week. BUT, I will neither admit, nor deny! Yup, yup … that’s the way to do it!

Oh yah by this time of the day we were with our friend, the car was in the shop. Right before he left the guy called to explain to our friend what he though we should do. I can’t remember everything, but it only cost $250 … that’s still low in our book for car maintenance. SO. NO complaints. There’s a couple worries coming down the path though. He says something about where they put the antifreeze maybe manifold something has a slight leak … not like whole drops of something are coming out … but he said if we’re going to keep the car that might be a $700 expense. Same kind of story about the air conditioner. It has some problem with something under the dash board and he said that’s like another $700 expense. So, he filled up the fluids in the first and shored up the air conditioner and we’ll see if it will work for a couple of months into the summer. Not sure what we’re going to do without a car, some day. He recommended when he got to the tires putting in quality for 55,000 miles … I took heart in that. Umm, that was another couple of hundred dollars and more time out of the house. Oh, and he replaced something in my lighter so that works, but we’re not sure if the whole navigational system works, because I needed to recharge the PDA. We’ll learn. Hmm, did some other fluids, and he checked out a couple of noises. They were the kind of thing you say … ok … we better learn to live with that too. The stuff for the PDA though is all set up. He showed me how it all hooks together.

Whoops found T again … but its pretty much worked up until my bed time … maybe more in the morning … let’s see we need to talk about tiny bit tires, V’S STILL SICK! My Grandma had a hard day, T’S HOME!!! Hmm, that might be it …Hmm, maybe I better finish up here … we’ll try to make it short. Hhehehehe stop laughing! As far as the tires, the mechanic sent me to the same place we got the back ones and he gave me the right prices and what to tell the guys and stuff. So, we handed them the keys and went over to a pizza place next door because he said it would be an hour. Those silly people said they only use credit cards over $20. Shoot last time I go there! We only had enough cash for a hard Mike’s and some fried mushrooms. Any way watched the news and heard a little bit .. too far away and someone let their kids run in the aisle! Shoot … don’t kids have walk buttons or something? Anyway got back to the tire place and they were almost done, but then the guy came in and told me they had put new tires on back. And, I said uh uh … they are supposed to go on the front. He had the slip there, so I pointed that out. They were backed up two hours, but I held firm … He said, wait a sec and he went out and talked to another guy. I could see them both looking at me, the car, and the paper. Then the bigger guy came back in and tried to play dense. He said, I don’t know if we talked about that … and then I showed him the paper, cuz he had typed in the directions. He said … oh that’s right and they had to bring my car back in and fix it. I was sooooo smart! YAYYYYYYY! That’s it … that’s the tire story Hehehehe

Sweetie pie should have gotten to his lake about an hour ago and he said he’d be in bed at 9 pm, because he stayed up and played cards last night so he could lose money official. Hehehehe … poor baby! I think they only play top bet $2 so he’s not financially sunk or nuthin. He’ll be happy I got what we paid for. Cuz the mechanic said no more than $200 and have them put new tires in front! AHA!

My grandma part we’re worried about … she was passing blood again, but I guess the doctor said that if she didn’t get dizzy, she’d just have to rest. So, we’re going to worry over that a bit. She said she just napped most of the day and only got up for washroom and to eat. I could hear the her voice dragging a bit. Didn’t like that so we kept the conversation short. Not too short though, because she said she could be up a little longer after I reminder her I didn’t want to tire her out. I think she likes the calls … I know I do. I told her we were going to call her tomorrow again to check on her. I think we’re going to call her while we’re gone too. She did however tell my uncle so that’s pretty good. She’s a smart Grandma. She was proud that I went shopping and took care of the car. So, that made me happy. And, in the meantime a couple of cousins I don’t know so good came in and visited. I think she had a hard time, because the great grandchildren are like 4 and 1 ½ and she thought she didn’t have enough room for them. Mostly though, she said she knew something was coming on, because she had felt weaker while with them.

We talked about that quite a bit. Pretty much she said that the doctors couldn’t operate at her age, or they would have taken part of the colon out. She said that it was just something that she would have to live with. I feel bad because I think she sees too that she’s coming to the last parts of her life and that her body is giving up in some places. I told her that we were going to go through it with her and there were a lot of people who felt the same way. I have it somewhere in my mind that she’s going to live a couple of more years. Maybe a few more. In some ways its sort of like my car … I don’t have anything to replace her … So we hope she’s got a long ways left to go.

V’s still sick. We don’t like the sound of that so good. He likes to say he’s getting better to most people, but we don’t always believe him. Especially, since he’s taking so long getting to see a doctor. Well, this is probably personal, BUT … I would be remiss if I didn’t say at least one HMPF! And, last, but not least T’s home  I think she’s jetting across the states again this week AGAIN! She had some bad luck with her last trip, but we’ll let her tell her story. Oh oh oh … wait !! And, there was some good news! While I was talking to my Grandmother the UPS guy came with the new books. I need to get a couple of addresses, but we’re going to ship some out! HOPEFULLY!!! I’m not super happy with the binding, but I like the paper stock and the ideal of the binding. I hope the books hold up … just not a real good idea to crease them open.
